Burnley FC in the Community’s STEM Initiative, Powered by Partners
Burnley FC in the Community is at the forefront of inspiring young minds through its primary schools STEM programme, ‘All SySTEMS Go.’ This initiative aims to ignite curiosity and passion for STEM subjects among Burnley’s youth by bridging the gap between education and industry. Partnering with local businesses like Safran Nacelles, Restart Consulting, Gener8, and Michael Bailey Associates, the programme showcases exciting career opportunities and fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and hands-on learning.
In 2023, recognizing the recruitment challenges faced by local STEM businesses, Burnley FC in the Community launched ‘All SySTEMS Go’ to raise aspirations and awareness among young people. The programme has engaged over 1,745 students through activities such as robotics, data analytics, and problem-solving challenges.
Key events include a partners’ lunch, visits to Safran Nacelles, player appearances at partner schools, and volunteer engagements in classrooms. These efforts have significantly raised awareness of STEM opportunities and inspired young people to pursue STEM careers.
Looking ahead, the programme plans to host a Women in STEM Day and Community Day at the Burnley FC match against Norwich, further promoting STEM education. This initiative exemplifies the impact of corporate social responsibility, demonstrating how business partnerships can create lasting community benefits.
Oxford United FC – Can we Talk?
Tragically, in the time it takes Oxford United to play a football match, someone in England loses their life to suicide. This worrying stat is one we are passionate about changing for the better.
It’s a topic that has touched and continues to touch the Club. Arguably the greatest-ever player, Joey Beauchamp, lost his life to suicide, and more recently, it was the same story for 24-year-old father and supporter, Jack Badger. Hearing these stories, and that of current player Will Vaulks who lost both his grandfathers to suicide, we realised we had to step in and use the power of football to help save lives. These families wished for their loved ones to have asked, Can We Talk?
With the support of Sky Sports, Oxfordshire Mind, The Joey Beauchamp Foundation, Baton of Hope, and Oxford United in the Community, we campaigned to say We Can Talk, connecting with 1.33 million people on social media and over 200 people with in-person workshops. This is just the beginning, as we will now train our Men’s First Team, all senior leaders, staff, and supporters in suicide prevention.
This campaign was not for clicks and likes; this was about saving lives.
Paris Saint-Germain & Partners – Pink October
Partnering with Qatar Airways, MatchWornShirt, LIDS, and Fanatics, Paris Saint-Germain renews its heartfelt commitment to the Pink October campaign for the third consecutive season, raising awareness about breast cancer globally and promoting early detection. Together, we strive to support and shine a light on a cause impacting millions worldwide: the fight against the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women.
Each year, over 2.3 million women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer, resulting in 670,000 deaths globally. In France alone, it affects over 60,000 annually. These figures drive the club’s determination to raise awareness and make a meaningful impact.
In 2024, PSG expanded its efforts by engaging the men’s team, creating a dedicated jersey with a pink ribbon, worn during a match, and auctioning match-worn kits to raise €32,677. Broadening the campaign’s reach, visibility grew 4.3 times from the previous year, with 40M impressions, 16M video views, and 2M social media engagements. Fans could also participate by purchasing their own ribbon. In-store, in-stadia and online activations engaged thousands, further amplifying awareness. All funds raised support a therapeutic education program at AP-HP Hospital, providing medical guidance and emotional support, including decorating waiting rooms and offering Shiatsu workshops.
Prostate Cancer UK – Prostate United
Prostate United sees football staff and fans run, walk or cycle a set distance every day in October. Managed by Prostate Cancer UK, the largest men’s health charity in the UK, it has become one of the UKs biggest football fundraising challenges, raising over £1million for the charity.
The challenge was founded back in 2018 by Ross Burbeary and Stephen Gilpin, both then performance staff members at Rotherham United. They were running in memory of Gilpin’s grandad, who died from prostate cancer. In years that followed, huge numbers of staff and fans from other clubs have joined them.
2024 was a record breaking year – with over £377,000 raised to take the total past the magic million. The challenge smashed all previous impact , with huge increases in fundraising, club engagement, PR, social media and participation. Clubs and fans joined Prostate United from 80 clubs across the football pyramid.
Prostate United is more than a fundraising challenge. It highlights the power of the football community to be a force for good. It’s allowed the charity to develop a community that cares about prostate cancer – increasing awareness of the most common cancer in men, to save men’s lives.
